Wall texture trends can change quite a bit. Please look at walls from an older home and compare them with walls from a newer building. There is a chance that the texture of the walls may be different in many ways.
Knockdown textures can be altered, just like any trend. For example, popcorn wall texture from a decade ago can be removed. Orange peel texture, which is more in fashion now, can also be added. Because individuality is so important in design, it’s possible to mix and match styles and aesthetics. You can even change the wall texture!
Get ready
Make sure you are familiar with the wall texture technique and have all the necessary supplies before starting to texture walls. It is most accessible to texture walls in a clean room. However, if you don’t have the space, move your furniture to the middle of the room and cover it using tarps. Texturing can be messy, so wear old clothes and protect your hands.
Orange Peel
Orange peel wall texturing is one of the most well-known textures. It looks exactly like it sounds. When applied correctly, the orange peel wall texture will look like an orange peel. You will need primer, drywall mix, sand, and a sprayer to achieve an orange peel texture.
You can apply any wall texture you want, but you have the option to do it as many or as you wish. You can use more drywall texture to give your walls an orange peel. You can use less mix if you prefer a subtler orange field.
Sand Swirl
You can create a sand-swirl wall texture by using primer and perlite. You can make large swirls on your wall with a texture brush or a knockdown knife. This wall texture is ideal for rooms with lots of texture and character, but not so much that the walls take over the decor.
Comb
The combing technique may be correct if you want to express your creativity and let your artistic side show through. Comb walls are created using a unique texturing tool to create your pattern or shape into the wall texture. If you’ve ever seen walls with intricate lines and shapes, this is likely comb walls. To make this one work, you will need a special wall brush and creativity.
Knockdown
Knockdown wall texturing is the most accessible and popular form of wall texture. Knockdown walls are very similar to traditional stucco walls. It would help if you started with a clean wall to achieve the perfect knockdown texture.
After the walls have been dried, mix your wall texture compound and water until it resembles an oatmeal texture. After your surface is applied to the walls, smoothen out any bumps or larger chunks with a knife, so there are no jagged areas.
Venetian
Venetian wall texture can be a great choice if you want a rustic but elegant look in your home. Venetian wall texture and paint make us feel like we are in an Italian Countryside. Venetian wall texture is difficult to apply because it requires unique wall texturing compounds, including marble dust.
Are the results excellent? Yes. This is something that a novice DIYer should attempt. You can decide how much texturing is appropriate for your walls. It is also possible to leave your walls completely flat.
If your ceiling is coated with knockdown texture, you must use a specific application strategy. You must be careful with knockdown-textured ceilings as they are susceptible to heavy drippage. This type of ceiling is also prone to uneven paint absorption due to its thick layers of texture. You might end up with a streaky finish, making the paint appear shiny in certain areas but duller in others.
This decorative finish can be applied to accent walls using Knockdown Aerosol Wall Texture. This wall texture, which is heavy in body, can be removed with a drywall knife. Our popular aerosol texture products are suitable for both professional and amateur contractors.
This product is specifically formulated for patching knockdown or “southwest-style” drywall textures. This premium-bodied texture can be applied and then raked down with a drywall knife. This texture can be used to add decorative effects to accent walls and even to texture entire rooms.
Spray texture on the drywall
Spray textures are created using a pump that circulates compressed air through a nozzle to spray the drywall mud. The type of sprayer and the nozzle determine the pattern.
Knockdown/splatter drag is created by spraying a pattern and then using a knife to smoothen the peaks.
Orange peel – A lightly dimpled texture that looks like the orange’s surface
Popcorn / Acoustic – A knobby, smooth surface that dampens sound
Textures for drywall are hand-applied
Hand textures can be more customized and applied using a trowel or knife. To create patterns, some hand textures will require a sprayer.
Skip trowel – Apply a thin layer of the paste with a knife, scoop, and hold it at an angle to form a raised layer with random curves.
Hawk and trowel: A multi-layered pattern that resembles waves and curves.
Santa Fe – Santa Fe has a low profile texture, which resembles an Adobe surface.
Stomp/slap brush: Apply a large circular brush to the surface and then pull it back.
Crowsfoot – Two brushes are used to apply a stomping brush texture with two brushes placed side-by-side
Rosebud – A stomping brush texture applied in a uniform pattern using a small circular bristle.
Swirl – Created with a medium to thick bristled brush, swept in circles and arcs
Use a comb or toothed trowel to make grooves in half-fan or arced shapes.

Questions frequently asked
Do you need to texture drywall?
Drywall doesn't have to be textured. A textured surface conceals flaws and does not require frequent repairs. Paint drywall without or with texture, as long as joints are properly mucked and the cover is primed.
What does knockdown texture conceal?
A knockdown texture conceals flaws, seams, uneven areas, and minor stains on walls and ceilings. A smooth surface is more reflective of light, highlighting weaknesses.
A knockdown texture hides them. A thicker layer of knockdown texture hides the most flaws.
How long does wall texture take?
A typical home will take less than one day to texture drywall with a spray coating. Hand-applied textures can take up to three days, depending on the style and number of drywall workers.
